I still love this game and play it a lot. I think, the shield item is a bit overpowered. Once you have three units with a shield and a bit of boost in health and attack, you cannot loose anymore.

Probably you would get similar problems with Summoners or rats with Funnybones (I can try to test this if needed) - something about the row being full, and both the unit AND the item trying to summon at the same time seems cause the crash (cuts directly to black screen) EDIT: I've done the experiment (see below). Looks like its only skulls for some reason.
Love the game, played it all day for 2 days until I had it down to a precise science. I cant wait for it to drop on steam with more features and possibly a local multiplayer? Can we get that?

Spells not being worth the space they take up (While they can be solid, they just are crazy hard to use and therefore not worth the while when you can drop flying skulls and the rocker with imps and rats to win)

For the lulz. I didn't even have any summons. I got my 3 sword boys to 99/99 with a lot of castle health left, so I thought I'd try to fill the board with level 3 guys. I picked bards and rockers because I wanted to prolong the game and they are really weak on their own, plus it's funny to have a band playing for the final battle with the king.
Came back to this one year later and... Damn. This is better than ever. One note though: I'm playing on a lower end PC and it's lagging horribly. Before a steam release, could we get a lower graphics setting?
It's pretty hard! I've got to the stage of "kind of Consistent 7/8", but getting below 7 is *really* hard.
Generally speaking:
You want to do 4 or 5 damage on turn one (2 skelletons, 2 skulls is best opening). and 8 or 9 damage on turn 2, 11-12 castle damage turn 3. Skulls and bones are the way. (Two skulls and one bone is three purchases and gives 5 damage to castle). Teir 3 Summon book also pretty critical if you are trying to do a rush.
The other critical thing: If you are trying to race, Life is a resource. A resource to be spent. When in full rush mode, I often end up leaving an entire row empty in round 5 or 6, meaning I take 5 or 7 damage that round... but pushing through 20 damage in exchange. By the time I START the king fight I'm often on only 1 or 2 hp. So long as the king dies before I do, its a win.
... With that said, leaning heavily on the "rush only" strategy can be less fun (you just ignore a whole bunch of fun and cool units because they are not part of the "max damage every round" game plan.
Yo, quick crash report: On the browser, with a stacked row, my Skull (with bones) got killed (in the top row) and tried to summon a skull and a funny bone. There was no open space behind, and then the entire screen went black, between damage and new summons appearing.

Took me about 6 hours to beat the game, I thought it was over when I beat the castle only to find out that the game continues, lose against the king in a humiliating way, and start over again.
This game had me focused on it for hours, I absolutely love the art style, the sound effects, and the many many systems in the game, I didn't you I can merge soldiers to level them up till I did it by mistake.
i beat this game with the power OF SUMMONING! basicallly i put a fully merged rat, a fuly merged summoner and a fully merged flying skull with that bone item that summons bones when they die on the same row as a fully leveld up bard
Big Boned beat the King with the help of a farmer. Bottom lane was a bard buffing like 30 rats, and the top was a kobold, assassin, and led by a succubus
Imo, the Nurse heals minions in front of her when they lose health due to a melee attack. The amount of healing is limited and will not trigger when being attacked by a distant attack, e.g. the bottle of the royalist.
Great game, I've been playing it occasionally for months now. One feedback for version 11: Items in shop are sparkling, even if it is not possible to merge them with currently owned items right away. Especially at the later stages of game this results in confusion because of lot of sparks. I think that previous logic was better - sparkles were only on the items that can be merged with owned items right away. For this sole reason I'm staying with older version 10.

Truly Amazing Game!
Tips for those that are stuck:
Creating a level 3 piece creates a better item on the top right of the item box (use that before creating another level 3 piece).
Sometimes it is better to have two level 2's than a single 3.
Without money houses, optimal buying is for 1 reroll and 3 pieces.
Don't freeze to much in the early rounds. You want have the option to buy better pieces.
Always get the first book and use to replace the shield.
Use your first book as soon as possible in the round since it triggers by movement.
Wait to use your 2nd (skeleton) book for the row that needs it.
If you don't need to use the skeleton book, then don't. That way you can delay seeing the final boss.
Don't buy the 3rd book.
The Final Boss:
Final boss is always in the middle. Have your best pieces there since as long as you kill the king you technically win.
Before the final boss, sell all your buildings and any useless pieces.
Use the 1st book on any enemy shield pieces in the second row (or if you are definitely going to win, use it on his two knights).
Specifically:
Assassins behind tanks with shields = win.
Stone thrower > Archer since they only attack their column (more predictable) and upgraded stone throwers continue to throw.
Make a single row for summon/summoners = win.
Money house = win.
Like @El_Makina, the shield item is overpowered.
Don't buy the 3rd book or the wizard piece.

Double Archers murder my Skulls+Bones, tries to explode into a full row, game crash. :(
This also happens to me. Whenever an archer kills a skull with bone item, the game crashes. Not sure why it does not happen on close range kill tho.
Pretty sure it happens because the skull tries to "unpack", and if there is no space in the row, the game crashes.
Something about how that is handled is different to Summoners or rats, (if they don't have enough space, you just lose some of your summons)

Did my best to crash the game only using rats, summoners and funny bones (no skulls)
Turns out, for this set up even if my rats get shot and the row overflows, the game can handle it.
So... whatever error is going on, it appears to ONLY apply to Skulls with Funnybones on them.
Not sure why that is, but hope it helps.
EDIT: (That, or there's something special about dude's being shot in row one as opposed to row three... but this seems less likely to be the cause.)

some advice is use some good strategies like using bard with stuff like skulls or just brute force with shield

after a long time i finally beat it
i had the trio of skulls with funny bone, with bards and rocker to buff the insane amount of summoned things.
i won with 0 hp left due to the king being rushed and dying to like 10 bones and skulls

Why do you have multiple rockers? I thought their effect does not stack, so it makes no sense to have more than one. Am I wrong?

If you want a challenge, see how *fast* you can do a run.
The best I've got on the current version is a 6 turn run (5 turns used to be possible, not sure if it is any more)
the best i've done is a 7! what are the strats for faster than that? mine felt like a total fluke

Really fun game, took me days to beat it and I only got the "?" ending. The RNG is brutal, but the mechanics and art style are really good.

Love the game! Won twice now, both times were thanks to Guts From Berserk(tm). Neither time was without taking damage though.
