Only played one time part way through. It is pretty rough not being able to change the order of units once you place them, but can see how that makes it a big part of the strategy once you know what kind of units will be available.
At certain times it seems a bit unclear on what to click on or what you can click on. Took a bit to realize that you could upgrade units. Also, never really understood the freeze and the interactions when clicking on the units to buy.
you can swap their place! by clicking on the tomb and clicking on another in the shop phase.
Also, the freeze is so the unit in the shop stays there after rerolling or after a turn!
anyways, I am planning on making a few of these things about more clear, hahaha, as yeah, they can be quite tricky, especially because some of the mechanics are very gente related (games like super auto pets, auto battlers in general)
I really love this. I keep playing it, and even installed it on Android. I'd like to see those "coming soon" things happening, and maybe some new units. I think the Wizard unit could use rebalancing, because letting the units advance to be able to cast another spell or else the unit's special ability is just wasted is just bad. It makes spells worse.
One bug that makes the mobile version much harder to use is that it doesn't full-screen properly, and obviously there's no windowed mode on phones. Buttons at the bottom get cut off as a result. Something to fix before the full final release that I hope is coming! (Yeah, I know, looking at the dates. I can still hope.)
Summon units: Bards, Rockers, and then any combination of Ratling / Summoner / Flying Skulls. Give your skulls a funny bone. Summon unit builds are the strongest in this game.
Bulldozer builds: Using a Pigman, fully-upgraded Excalibur or Sticky, or a Big Boned- buff them up with everything possible. Shields, milk, milkmen, nurses, farmers and blacksmiths. A single juiced up unit can wipe out entire rows and take on the king 1-on-1 if you buff them up enough.
Viking train: Viking in front! Assassin behind viking! Nurse behind Assassin! Upgrade them all and they will tear through everything. Bonus points for milkman in front or a stoner / kobold behind. Viking benefits from farmer.
And the most important GENERAL tip of them all: FULLY UPGRADE UNITS! Early game especially! So easy to get a fully upgraded stoner, skeleton, viking, milkman or flying skull! And these can carry you for the rest of the run! More importantly they will immediately allow you access to another higher-power unit right off the bat that can totally change and inform how you approach the rest of the round.
THANK YOU SO MUCH I MANAGED TO BEAT IT WITH THE RATS BUFFED UP AND LEVELED UP AND THE HEART GIRL THAT SWITCHED ENEMYS TO ALLIES AND THE SUMMONERS ARE SO FUN INCLUDING THE SPELL SUMMON LV 3 SAVED ME SOOO MANY TIMES. THANKS AGAIN... :)
Could you add spells that stun enemies for a few turns? Or maybe units that can't move but have high stats for defending? Then there would be a good build for stalling the enemy, still a good game though :)
Wonderful game! Really makes you think about your decisions. I love spells, and summoning units.
Some things could use a bit better explanation.. I was confused quite a bit and had to figure things out through trial and error.
In the end it's a little too difficult a game for me. Maybe if I got a little reward every time I died? With better rewards for dying closer to the King? Like maybe an extra gold or a starting unit.
Hi. I have been playing this game almost nonstop for the last week.
At first I couldn't beat it at all.
Then I managed to get the "okay" ending where you die but take out the king, finally.
After another day, I beat the game and got the good ending. I kept playing it for a week. Actually, it might be closer to two now. I am addicted to this game.
I play it whenever I'm bored. I have stayed up to like, 3 or 4AM playing this game on 3 different occasions.
I have beaten it upwards of 25 times- usually alive, though I have completed it dead 3 or 4 times as well.
Today, just now, not even 5 minutes ago- I finally completed my self-imposed challenge; Beating the game without losing a single heart of damage. A level 3 pigman with a shield and a farmer in front of it really does solve all a man's problems. I also only discovered yesterday that spells even GOT to level 3... level 3 bat curse singlehandedly made me understand why spells are worth it; Gotta say, they're underwhelming when not fully upgraded.
I have one more self-imposed challenge to complete; I want to see the level 3 versions of every single unit. I have already seen the vast majority of them. I think all I need now is to get a level 3 rocker, level 3 farmer, and level 3 blacksmith. Oh, and level 3 divine protection spell.
I have created an itch.io account today, for the sole purpose of leaving this comment. I never had one before now. But you need to know this. You must hear my cry:
Very clever and fun game! Just a couple things that would dramatically improve the QOL would be make the hover tooltip collision a lot bigger. You have to mouse over the VERY center of a shop item to get the pop up right now and it's a little finnicky. Another thing is I think just get rid of the tombstones. You instinctively want to hover and click on the units since that's what you clicked to buy them but you have to hover and click on the tombstones once they're on the field. The tombstones just don't feel quite as intuitive and I don't think they really add anything. One last thing I'd recommend is making the cost of things apparent on the units/spells in the shop so you don't have to hover and glance up to your coins to see how much it costs. It's much easier to make decisions if you can see all the necessary info in one place.
Took me a bit to figure out the general strategy, but I eventually won! Then I won two more times. Very fun game, reminds me a lot of when Super Auto Pets had just come out. :3
Defeated the king! Woo! This is a lovely game. Cute style, good mechanics (there's actually some strategy balancing early game vs late game). Enjoyed greatly
Damn, pretty addictive game. took me a couple of hours but I manage to get to the ending. The learning curve can be summed in knowing when to use the books and what strat to use depending in the units you get at the start (Usually the ones you can pair in 3es so you can level them up). Summoner strat seems to be the easiest.
Level 3 curse book and level 3 summoner book combo pretty well when you dont know if your lane will survive or you are agaisnt high health enemies and you lack sucubus.
If you are lucky with mausoleum you have an almost secure win.Lastly you pretty much can ignore the princes if you have more than 2 health or if you know you can kill the king before they manage to get to the last tile.
I found a bug and i dont know if its known. On Android, while stacking two lv.1 sucubi i fat fingered the start round button on the king fight while the level up animation was still going. This caused a crash and my game forced quit. There was an error message, but I couldn't screenshot it.
i honestly wouldnt mind paying around 5$ for a more fleshed out version of this game. My tips would be to add an endless mode, expand on the amount and variety of cards(not easy but makes the gameplay loop more variable) and give players some sort of upgrade system (not an in-run system because that would just complicate runs more, but i mean something like necrosmith has. it gives subtle boosts that make playing the game over and over feel worth it. plus it's not multiplayer so it wouldnt bother anyone with the whole "noob vs pro" stuff)
i think bless is bugged. for whatever reason, blessed troops deal extra damage than what's displayed? like, there's a +1 attack, which is displayed (2 becomes 3), but they gain more attack than that. a 2/2 with bless becomes 3/2, but it deals 4 damage against shieldless troops.
Loved this game! It would be rad if there were challenge modes as one-offs or able to be combined like the heat system in Hades. I think this would add some nice replayability at minimal dev cost! Some ideas:
Low life [1-3]: Start the run with 5|3|1 health
Stronger enemies [1-2]: Enemies have +1 health | have +1 health and attack
Speedrun [1-3]: Must win by round 14|12|10
I'm about to try out a 1 health (self-imposed) run. Thanks for making such a fun game! 💖
Great game just there is some balancing issues as lvl 3 skull book, monestary and succubus I fell are guaranteed wins (especially lvl 3 book with bard) and there are also really bad units like milk man, holy book and viking,(though I could see holy book being good if you add enemies with more damage) also i would love for it to be more clear what the skulls ability is as there is no way to know unless you level it
I have had success with milkman actually especially at level 3 as it gives a shield in addition to the buff. and if you invested in milkman in early levels, then get a really strong unit later, you have the milkman immediately applying to the higher tier unit which can be better than getting (and leveling up) one of the earlier units like the spear guy or the viking which become underwhelming later on their own.

Full health in 9 rounds run, pretty challenging!
Pretty cool game!

Thanks for those tips! I was planning on giving it another go later so they will help!

Great work and addictive gameplay.
Thanks a lot, enchainrain!! Hey, I'm still working on it! just life and jobs get in the way, hahaha
sometimes I post progress on twitter
could you send an screenshot of the scaling problem?
also phone specs, and its display size, thanks!
This game would do amazing on mobile. I could pay for full game at least 5-10$
Great game.
Played it multiple times over the past few days.
In the beginning I was consistently losing but always got close enough to try again.
Now I am consistently winning.
Impressive balancing
Piece of art
That was actually super nice ... well done indeed
this is so creative
I finally did it! Zero damage run
This game is like soooo nice
some balance changes and it would be fire
Great game, but it really needs a mute button.
I'm stuck Anyone have any advice on how to beat it?
BARDS
Bards, summoners, rats and skulls.

Strategies to try for different row compositions:

quick question, is it possible to mod this game?
Could you add spells that stun enemies for a few turns? Or maybe units that can't move but have high stats for defending? Then there would be a good build for stalling the enemy, still a good game though :)
Steam version ever? The game is great, would love achievements and the like :-)

very good, very frustrating. i would not be a good imperial warlord

MAKE MORE NECROCHESS!!!!!!!!!!

another QoL tip, make clicking on a book automatically pause the game, no need for that to be an extra step
very fun game! bard strategy is really op!
when will the new decks and levels be released.

Will you ever put the full game on steam? I would buy it if you did.

Fantastic game, premise is nice, gameplay loop is great, I strongly recommend you flesh it out and add it to steam! Wonderful.
Woo i got the special ending?
I only seem to get these endings lol
I left a strategy on how to get the ending where the witch didn't die if you need it, I can even give you a YouTube link if you need it

Finally! I was able to defeat the king without losing any hp! Damn, it took quite a lot of time. Loved this game! Waiting for updates!
Love the art and playstyle! The instructions and visuals for using coins was still a bit confusing.

Wow this game is extremely difficult, especially the fourth phase. I will beat it eventually though. My rating is 10/10
Update: Made it to the boss battle, oh my god the king is stupid strong
I finally beat it! Here's my strategy:
Back row: Stonetosser (Excalibur in the middle, use big buff on him)
2nd back row: Rats
2nd front row: Summoners
Front row: Succubus
Extra row: Mausoleum (sell it right before boss battle for additional 3 coins), summon spell, use the empty slot if needed
I think I've found an upgrade to your strategy, by swapping out the excalibur with a pigman, and the stonetossers with kobolds
Good job bro 👍
Great game just there is some balancing issues as lvl 3 skull book, monestary and succubus I fell are guaranteed wins (especially lvl 3 book with bard) and there are also really bad units like milk man, holy book and viking,(though I could see holy book being good if you add enemies with more damage) also i would love for it to be more clear what the skulls ability is as there is no way to know unless you level it
